Chunyun, or 'Spring migration' in China, is the largest human event on the planet. In 2017 -- the Year of the Rooster -- Chinese authorities expect holidaymakers to make 3 billion trips by land over the 40-day period, which starts in January. Some stations including the Beijing Railway Station have employed the facial recognition technology to increase the efficiency.
On January 13, many tourists arrived at the Beijing Railway Station to catch the train back to their hometown early in the morning. The Chunyun period kicked off earlier this year and will last 40 days from January 13 to February 21.
(What are you here for in Beijing?) For work. (Where are you heading?) My hometown. (Where is your hometown?) Sichuan. The New Year is coming. I'm going home for the family reunion.
The first 15 days of Chunyun will see the main traffic flow from Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou. It is expected that China's high-speed rail system will take more than 60% of the Chinese people back home.
Normally, the trains would be running in single units, but we have adopted the multiple unit models and provided night train services on peak travel days.
By connecting two trains together, the number of carried passengers is increased by one fold. 30 automatic ticket machines and 6 E-gates are also installed to increase the efficiency in Beijing Railway Station.
Please place your ticket on your ID and insert the barcode.
It was very quick. Probably less than three seconds.
The facial recognition technology has allowed passengers to go through in 3 seconds. A food ordering and delivery app is also available in Chongqing so that passengers don't go hungry on their way home.
